The ECUMEST Association and "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest
invite you on Monday, 20 March 2006, 18:00, to the conference
"Conflictual heritage and recent memory" held by Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper, complemented by a local perspective offered by Catalin Berescu.
 Art historian, conservator, and theorist specialized in monuments of recent history, Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper will discuss about the conflictual value of heritage in post-communist countries, as ilustrated by various examples from Berlin. About the ambivalence of memory of recent past and the monuments, buildings and sites that are witnesses of it. How to deal with this recent heritage which provokes in different people personal reactions and such different attitudes?

 How do these polemics and tensions translate in a city like Bucharest? Catalin Berescu will speak about the demolishing of Bucharest as a founding act of the city of the present - the big moments of the demolition, the spectacular displacement of churches, but also the birth of the big spaces of disorder that still define Bucharest. The confused and sometimes blurry memory of Bucharest's inhabitants - from the continuous mourning of those that outlived this history to the creation of particular myths employed by those that never got to know that Bucharest - generates the combination of indifference and enthusiasm with which public authorities are nowadays carrying our their grand urban developments. Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper is an art historian, conservator, and theorist specialized in monuments of recent history, contested sites of heritage, the contemporary art of commemoration, and 20th-century architecture and conservation theory. Currently professor at the Technische Universität Berlin, she was buildings conservator at the Senate of Urban Development in Berlin from 1988 to 2002, a guest scholar at the Getty Conservation Institute in 2001-2002, and a member of the UNESCO international experts group for the rebuilding of the Bridge of Mostar from 2002 to 2004.
Catalin Berescu is an architect and professor at the Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism. His areas of interest are extreme poverty, the encounter between the new medias and architecture and the architectural pathologies.
