Balkan Express - The Balkan performing arts network -, launched in the year 2002 at the initiative of performing arts operators from throughout Europe, aims to become an informal platform of performing arts professionals from Balkan countries, as well as beyond, which facilitates the exchange of information, ideas and projects, the dialogue and communication, and encourages collaboration in the Balkan region, helping as well in establishing connections with other regions.
Following a series of exploratory or debate meetings which have taken place starting with the year 2002, Sfantu Gheorghe will host in 2004 a new encounter of Balkan Express focused on the topic of audience development, to be organised by ECUMEST Association.
The BE encounter in Sfantu Gheorghe will include:
> meetings focused on "Audience development: Sharing practices and experiences in the region". It will finalise with a small publication including the different initiatives and experiences, the key challenges and practices presented during the meeting (11-12 June);
> "exploration" of the performing arts sector in the host country - performances & meetings with artists and managers in the framework of the Atelier Festival. It may also include visits of venues and institutions in Bucharest (to be organised upon request);
> a training session for cultural operators focused on cultural cooperation in Europe, held by Corina Suteu (12 June);
> an artistic workshop for young theatre directors in Romania & the region, held by the prestigious theatre director Andrei Serban (13-14 June).

ACTIVITIES DETAILS
"Audience development: sharing practices and experiences in the region" (11-12 June)
The series of meetings will focus on different initiatives and experiences in the area of audience development and will include short presentations of different initiatives, followed by open discussion.
Artistic workshop for young theatre directors held by Andrei Serban (13-14 June)
The workshop is open for young theatre directors in Romania & the region and will be held by the prestigious theatre director Andrei Serban. The workshop is open to maximum 20 participants and will be held in the English language.
Andrei Serban is a famous theatre and opera director of Romanian origin, living for more than 25 years in New York City. He has worked in the United States with American Repertory Theatre, LaMama ETC, the Public Theater, Lincoln Center, Circle in the Square, Yale Repertory Theatre, the Guthrie Theatre, A.C.T., and the New York City, Seattle and Los Angeles Operas. In Europe, Mr. Serban has worked at the Paris, Geneva, Vienna, and Bologna Opera Houses, the Welsh National Opera, Covent Garden, Théâtre de la Ville, Helsinki Lilla Teatern, the Bucharest Municipal Theatre, among others; and in Japan with the Shiki Company of Tokyo. He has taught acting and directing at Yale, University of California, Carnegie-Mellon, Sarah Lawrence, the Paris Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique, and the A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theatre Training, and has received grants from the Ford, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller Foundations. Several of his productions have been nominated for Broadway and off-Broadway awards. He is a tenured professor at Columbia University, where he heads the MFA acting program.
Training session for cultural operators: How to set up international projects. The role of European cultural networks, held by Corina Suteu (12 June)
The session will offer a historical view about European cultural cooperation and cultural networks, as well as an updated information about the emerging logic of cultural partnership and the values that shape cooperation in the enlarged Europe. The session will be held in the English language.
Corina Suteu is an expert in European cultural policies and cultural management courses and is currently president of ECUMEST and head of the Cultural Management Unit (IHT - Nantes). She was Director of the European Master's degree in cultural management of Dijon Business School in France and initiated and implemented the MA program ECUMEST for Eastern Europe and the Policies for Culture ECF/ECUMEST program. She was president of the Forum of European networks. She works regularly as an expert for the OSI network, the European Cultural Foundation, the Council of Europe and UNESCO. She also is a lecturer for the IEP Lyon (DRECI), Observatoire des Politiques Culturelles et IEP Grenoble, Paris VIII, College de Bruges, Salzburg Seminar, MA of intercultural management in the Balkans/Belgrade and collaborator of the Boekman Foundation.
Performances
Access to all performances in the framework of the ATELIER Festival is free for registered participants to the BE encounter. The programme of the ATELIER Festival will be available at the end of April.
LOGISTICAL DETAILS
Logistics
Arrival of participants will take place on 10 & 11 of June; departure will take place on 13& 15 of June. Bus transportation from Bucharest to Sfantu Gheorghe (4-hour drive) and back will be organised for all these dates.
The meetings, workshop and training session will be hosted by the Arcus Cultural Center, located at 6 km from the town of Sfantu Gheorghe. Local transport between Arcus and Sfantu Gheorghe will be secured by organisers.
Accommodation can be organised in both Sfantu Gheorghe and Arcus.
Foreign participants from the region must verify if they need a visa for Romania. In this case, organisers can assist them in obtaining a visa.
Registration
Registration is now open for the meetings, workshop and training session. Since a limited number of participants can be accepted for the workshop and training session, selection will be done on the basis of the applications submitted before 25 May, by filling in the registration form and sending it to the indicated contacts.

Financial details
Participation to the workshop and training session is free of charge for selected participants.
Transport to Bucharest (or Sfantu Gheorghe for participants arriving via other cities) must be secured by participants, whereas local transport will be provided by organisers.
The organisers can secure accommodation and meals for a limited number of participants, on the basis of the financial support requests submitted to ECUMEST Association before 25 May (in the registration form).
For international travel subsidies, you should try to find funds from your own country, region or city. At the same time, you can apply to a specialized programme of travel grants, STEP beyond, provided by the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam (www.eurocult.org). Please be aware that you should submit your application to this fund no later than 23 April.
